Quiz Randomizer

This tool allows you to enter up to 50 multiple choice questions, and will then export a RTF file (viewable in Microsoft Office, Pages and OpenOffice) containing four versions of the quiz, with each version presenting the questions in a different random order. The order of the multiple choice options is also randomized, and an answer key to all four quizzes is provided.

iPad version of markwainwright.com

I've been surgically attached to my iPad for a few months now, so it seemed a shame that my website looked less than great in its Safari browser. So in October I spent a couple of days creating an iPad-optimised version of the stylesheet — making heavy use of how iOS 5 opens up momentum-style scrolling to web developers. The result gives the site more of the feel of a native app, and really makes for a better browsing experience. If you own an iPad, give it a look.

certified-miracles

Certified Miracles

In this project, I took detailed images created by a web designer and turned them into an operational website. This involved building a custom WordPress theme, page by page, template by template to match the designer's specification, pixel-for-pixel. It also involved coding additional functionality into the theme's backend for the client to later use, such as the ability to upload featured images and modify social media links.

Dissertation

Are smarter people less likely to make anomalous decisions under uncertainty? My undergraduate dissertation focused on this question, and involved building and running an online experiment and analysing the results. I hugely enjoyed putting it together, and it has ended up being one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. It was later described by my supervisor as "a genuine addition to knowledge" and given a mark of 91% — the highest amongst my year group of 300 at the University of Nottingham. You can read the full text and appendices here and a beginner-friendly introduction and explanation here.

ner-website

Nottingham Economic Review

In my last year of university I played Editor for the NER, a student-run magazine providing topical economic and political analysis. I also took the role of a Web Editor, which included building and maintaining a comprehensive website. It uses a multi-site Wordpress installation and a theme that I heavily customised to better suit the needs of the magazine. I also thoroughly enjoyed writing an article for the magazine about the area of economics that interests me the most — experimental economics.

Roberto Forzoni

In September 2010 I worked with professional performance consultant Roberto Forzoni to adapt a WordPress theme to suit his needs, including implementing multiple types of portfolio pages and templates, as well as sourcing images and transferring content.

who-deleted-me

Who Deleted Me?

A while ago I created a tool that keeps a record of your Facebook friends list, and uses it to tell you when someone has deleted you. This is useful because a) it's functionality that's banned from applications inside Facebook and b) for some reason I genuinely care when people delete me. Built using PHP and flat-file JSON data storage, it pulls in data from Facebook's Graph API, using oAuth.

Nottingham School of Economics Newsletter

In 2010 I was asked to write about my experiences studying abroad, for the newsletter of the Economics Department at the University of Nottingham. I also contributed some photographs to the issue.

Impact Magazine

In February 2010 I wrote an article for the University's of Nottingham's Impact Magazine about the iPad, which I called 'iMust have one?'. It seems quaint now but at the time there was just complete speculation, and no one really knew what the device would become.

BBC ‘Nottingham At Night’

I'm pleased to say that I'm featured on the BBC website! One of my photos from first year was selected for Neil Heath's spectacular gallery of photos of Nottingham after hours.

Derby Hall

At the end of my first year at university I designed and built a site for my Hall of Residence with Chris Radford. It was basic, but included a slideshow and news ticker on the homepage, a calendar of events and a lightbox photo gallery.

Impact Magazine Travel Photo Competition

In 2009 I entered a photography competition being held by the University's of Nottingham's Impact Magazine with a photo that I took in Niagara Falls, NY. My entry was chosen as a runner-up, narrowly missing out on the top five.

Mark’s Simpsons Site

As a teenager I am not ashamed to say that I ran a site devoted to the Simpsons, which actually taught me a lot about web design and programming. I first created the site in early 2003, and over the years it grew from a bright-red-and-yellow Geocities monstrosity to a well-regarded member of the Simpsons web community, at one point being voted the 19th best Simpsons site online. Amidst a rapidly declining community, I closed it in June 2006.
